Hall of Fame horse racing trainer D. Wayne Lukas has been hospitalized and will not return to training, Churchill Downs announced. Lukas, known for his 15 Triple Crown victories, has been battling a severe infection that has worsened. His family revealed that he has declined aggressive treatment and opted to return home. Lukas’ horses have been entrusted to assistant trainer Sebastian “Bas” Nicholl.
Nicholl expressed his admiration for Lukas, acknowledging the legacy he has built in the horse racing world. Lukas, with 15 Triple Crown wins under his belt, stands as one of the most accomplished figures in the sport, second only to Bob Baffert. His success includes a record-tying 20 victories in the Breeders Cup and four Kentucky Derby wins since 1988. Lukas’ recent triumph in the Preakness with Seize the Grey marked his seventh, just one shy of Baffert’s record.
Churchill Downs president Mike Anderson praised Lukas for his indelible impact on horse racing, emphasizing his exceptional horsemanship and attention to detail. Lukas, also known as “Coach” in racing circles, due to his background in coaching high school basketball, is revered for his hands-on approach, often personally overseeing training sessions despite his impending 90th birthday.
Born in Wisconsin in 1935, Lukas initially made a name for himself in quarter horse racing before transitioning to thoroughbreds in the late 1970s. Notably, Lukas clinched his first Preakness victory with Codex in 1980. With nearly 5,000 documented wins and over $310 million in earnings from more than 30,000 starts, Lukas’ influence on the sport is undeniable.
Lukas’ absence from the training scene marks a significant loss for the horse racing community. His dedication, competitive spirit, and profound impact on the industry will be sorely missed. The news of his hospitalization has prompted an outpouring of support and well wishes from fans and colleagues worldwide.
As the racing world comes to terms with Lukas’ absence, his enduring legacy serves as a testament to his unparalleled contributions to the sport. The prayers and thoughts of many are with Lukas and his family during this challenging time, as the horse racing fraternity collectively acknowledges the void left by the absence of a true legend.
