Champion greyhound Valpolicella, hailed as the Greyhound of the Year in both Queensland and NSW in 2024, has successfully recovered from a serious leg injury. The stayer, known for her impressive track record, suffered a broken leg during a race at Albion Park on February 20. Initial concerns arose that the injury might lead to the loss of her leg, but thanks to the dedicated care provided by Alecia Evans and the team at Queensland Vet Services in North Lakes, Valpolicella has made a remarkable comeback.
Owner and breeder Sandro Bechini expressed relief at Valpolicella’s progress, noting that she is on track for a full recovery. Scheduled follow-up x-rays in July and August will determine her readiness to return home. Valpolicella’s racing history boasts 40 wins and 25 placings, accumulating earnings of $1.14 million. Her notable triumphs include victories at prestigious events such as the G1 Gold Cup, G1 Zoom Top, G2 Summer Distance Plate, and G3 Xmas Cheer, among others. She also set a track record at The Gardens.
Under the guidance of trainer Tony Zammit, Valpolicella underwent extensive treatment at the QVS clinic, enduring multiple surgeries and the use of a leg frame to aid in her recovery. The substantial costs incurred were partially alleviated by Racing Queensland’s support, emphasizing the industry’s commitment to the well-being of its canine athletes. Bechini emphasized that Valpolicella’s welfare remained their top priority throughout the rehabilitation process.
Despite her time at the clinic, Valpolicella is expected to resume breeding duties next year, with plans to mate her with Bernardo. This resilience and adaptability showcase her exceptional qualities beyond the racetrack, further cementing her legacy in the greyhound racing community. Bechini expressed admiration for Valpolicella’s ability to maintain her reproductive cycle despite the challenges she faced during her recovery.
Valpolicella’s journey serves as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of all involved in her rehabilitation. The greyhound’s successful recovery not only highlights her resilience but also underscores the collaborative efforts of veterinary professionals, trainers, and industry stakeholders in ensuring the well-being of racing dogs. As she prepares to return home and potentially embark on a new chapter in her breeding career, Valpolicella’s story resonates as a beacon of hope and inspiration in the world of greyhound racing.
