Harness Racing New South Wales (HRNSW) has announced the introduction of a new tiered prizemoney structure aimed at enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of harness racing in the state. Commencing on January 1, 2026, the new system will categorize races into three tiers across all HRNSW meetings to ensure that prizemoney aligns with the class and performance level of the horses.
The three tiers include Tier A races with higher prizemoney for top performers, Tier B for mid-tier races supporting the development of competitive horses, and Tier C for entry-level races to encourage participation and provide returns for horses at the base level of the industry.
According to HRNSW Chief Executive Peter Buckman, the revised structure aims to strike a balance between fairness, growth, and sustainability within the industry. Buckman emphasized that the tiered prizemoney system is designed to be both aspirational and accessible, recognizing the excellence of top-class horses while providing support for horses at different stages of their racing careers.
The decision to implement the tiered prizemoney structure followed extensive consultations with industry participants and stakeholders who expressed a strong desire for such a model. The objective is to ensure that prizemoney distribution supports all levels of the industry and rewards participants for their contributions to the sport.
As part of the new structure, HRNSW will also introduce payments to trainers who place 6th to 10th in races under $15,000. These payments will be applicable across all races in NSW at varying levels based on the race type.
The tiered prizemoney model and trainer payments are set to take effect from the beginning of 2026, with detailed prizemoney schedules available on the HRNSW website for reference. This initiative is aimed at providing meaningful returns to participants while ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of harness racing in New South Wales.
