Australia’s top harness racing driver, James Herbertson, is seizing an exciting international opportunity by venturing to the United States and Sweden. Having clinched the Australian national drivers’ title last season with an impressive 370 wins, Herbertson is now gearing up for a five-week stint in the US at the renowned stable of Ron Burke, a stalwart in the harness racing world with over 15,000 wins and substantial earnings.
Following his time in the US, Herbertson will make his way to Sweden for Elitloppet, under the guidance of trainer Jörgen Westholm. The journey to this international exposure began when Herbertson triumphed in the Young Guns Series in 2024, earning him the opportunity to travel to Sweden.
Expressing his anticipation for the upcoming experience, Herbertson emphasized his eagerness to learn and grow in his craft. Despite the sacrifices of missing out on significant races back home, he views this as a priceless chance for personal and professional development.

During his stay in the US, Herbertson will be based at Ron Burke’s stables and is set to collaborate with former Australian driver Brad Chisholm, who now operates in America. The support and opportunities provided by Burke’s team have been instrumental in facilitating Herbertson’s overseas venture.
With his departure scheduled for May 20 to Sweden, Herbertson is poised to immerse himself in the world of harness racing at an international level. His dedication to soaking up knowledge and experience from established trainers like Westholm underscores his commitment to honing his skills.

Reflecting on the valuable connections and guidance that have paved the way for this journey, Herbertson acknowledges the role of individuals like Jamie Durnberger-Smith, Mark Weaver, and Ron Burke in making this venture a reality.
As he gears up to return to Australian tracks by mid-June, Herbertson expresses gratitude for the unwavering support he has received throughout his career. Eager to resume racing in his home country, he looks forward to reconnecting with the racing community and picking up where he left off.
Herbertson’s bold decision to explore new horizons and challenge himself in unfamiliar racing territories showcases his ambition and dedication to his sport. The international exposure and insights gained from this experience are poised to elevate his skills and reputation within the global harness racing community.
