Training great Chris Lang had a remarkable week as he was honored as a Caduceus Club “Living Legend” and welcomed back his stable star, Ollivici, after an injury lay-off. Lang, a prominent figure in Australian harness racing, expressed surprise and gratitude for the prestigious award, acknowledging the support of his partner, Sonia Mahar. The induction marked Lang as the third member of his family to achieve Living Legend status, following his father Graeme and brother Gavin.
Lang’s illustrious career boasts an impressive record of training 38 Group 1 winners and driving 22, including renowned horses like Sundons Gift, Skyvalley, and National Interest. Notably, he secured three consecutive Inter Dominion trotting final victories with Galleons Sunset and Sundons Gift. Currently, Lang, in partnership with Sonia Mahar, is gearing up for the upcoming Inter Dominion in Brisbane, aiming for his fourth title in the prestigious event.
Ollivici, a talented trotter in Lang’s stable, is set to make a comeback after undergoing surgery to address a front fetlock issue. The horse, with an impressive track record of 18 wins and almost $300,000 in earnings, has shown promise in previous races, hinting at his potential in feature events. Lang expressed optimism about Ollivici’s return and outlined plans for a strategic build-up towards the Inter Dominion campaign.
Prior to his return at Melton, Ollivici underwent a series of trials to regain fitness and form. Lang emphasized a gradual approach in preparing the horse for upcoming races, with a keen focus on the Brisbane Inter Dominion. Ollivici’s first test post-injury will be the 2240m Aldebaran Park Trotters’ free-for-all at Melton, setting the stage for a series of races leading up to the main event.
Lang is contemplating early travel to Brisbane for Ollivici, considering racing opportunities at Albion Park and Redcliffe Trotters’ Cup to fine-tune the horse’s readiness for the Inter Dominion heats. Additionally, Lang plans to accompany the emerging three-year-old trotter, Farrokh, to Queensland, leveraging the lucrative bonuses available for Queensland-bred horses. Farrokh, who displayed potential with a recent win at Maryborough, is poised to make his mark in the racing circuit under Lang’s guidance.
As the harness racing community eagerly anticipates Lang’s strategic moves and Ollivici’s return to competition, the legend’s enduring legacy and unwavering commitment to the sport continue to inspire enthusiasts and aspiring professionals alike.
