Corey Peterson, a talented trainer-reinsman in the world of harness racing, achieved a significant milestone with his first breeding success. His filly, Manhattan Ruby, showcased remarkable prowess by clinching victory in the $31,000 Garrard’s Here On Track Pace over 2130m at Gloucester Park. This triumph marked Peterson’s inaugural win as a breeder in a metropolitan-class event, a remarkable feat considering Manhattan Ruby was the first pacer he had bred.
At just 24 years old, Peterson’s breeding venture bore fruit as Manhattan Ruby, the $1.70 favorite, surged to the front from the No. 4 barrier. With a stellar front-running performance, Manhattan Ruby dominated the race, finishing ten meters ahead of Lou Lamour, who made a strong late charge from fifth position. The filly displayed her speed by covering the final 800m in 57.2 seconds and clocking a rating of 1.58.4. This victory secured Manhattan Ruby’s third consecutive win, maintaining an impressive record of three wins in four starts and accumulating $28,260 in prize money.
Sired by the renowned pacer Soho Tribeca, Manhattan Ruby is the offspring of Bettors Delight mare, The Achiever, who had a commendable racing career with four wins, two placings, and earnings of $23,671 from 16 starts. The Achiever, initially under the care of WA trainer-reinsman Kim Prentice in 2017, faced setbacks due to a tendon injury but made a remarkable recovery. Peterson, seizing the opportunity, took over the training of The Achiever, guiding her to four victories before she succumbed to another injury.
Following The Achiever’s injuries, the owners generously gifted her to Peterson for breeding purposes. Recognizing her potential, Peterson outlined ambitious plans for The Achiever, targeting the Westbred Classic in September as her primary goal. The mare will undergo a brief respite before preparations for the prestigious race commence, with a potential eye on the WA Oaks depending on her performance.
Peterson’s success story not only highlights his emerging prowess as a breeder but also underscores the resilience and potential within the harness racing industry. Manhattan Ruby’s triumph stands as a testament to Peterson’s dedication, skill, and vision for breeding top-tier pacers. As he continues to nurture his breeding career, guided by past achievements and future aspirations, Peterson’s journey in harness racing promises exciting developments and further victories on the horizon.
