Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Revived with $4 Million State Funding

Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club is poised for a resurgence following a substantial financial commitment of $4 million from the State Government. This injection of funds has paved the way for the much-anticipated reconstruction of the greyhound track, which is scheduled to be completed by late 2026.

The decision to close the old track in 2022 was prompted by safety concerns arising from racing incidents and the outdated design of the facility. The upcoming construction project for the new track is expected to commence later this year and conclude within a twelve-month timeframe.

Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines recently visited the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club to announce the $4 million grant allocated from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund. This funding, combined with contributions from the club and Greyhound Racing Victoria, will bring the total investment in the track redevelopment to approximately $9.5 million.

The upgraded racetrack will incorporate state-of-the-art safety measures to address previous concerns and ensure a secure environment for racing activities. Enhancements will include a widened track base, improved racing surface, advanced lighting, and upgraded drainage systems. These improvements are aimed at enhancing the overall safety and integrity of the racing experience.

Moreover, the new track will feature modern design elements tailored specifically for race distances, along with enhanced animal welfare facilities such as purpose-built holding and viewing areas, as well as modern wash bays to prioritize the well-being of racing greyhounds.

Notable safety measures to be implemented at the new track include fixed starts at various distances, the removal of drop-on boxes, and the introduction of the Safechase system, which utilizes advanced monitoring technology to ensure the safety of participants.

The economic significance of the Cranbourne Greyhound Racing Club was underscored by Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Stuart Laing, who highlighted the substantial economic benefits generated by the club before its temporary closure in 2022. The club’s activities supported numerous jobs and contributed significantly to the local economy through race meetings and trials.

Looking ahead, the revitalization of the greyhound track is projected to create additional employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region. By 2030, it is estimated that Greyhound Racing activities in the City of Casey will support nearly 300 full-time equivalent jobs, with a projected economic uplift of $23.5 million over the next five years.

Local MP Pauline Richards praised the funding allocation as a significant development for the racing community in Cranbourne, emphasizing the positive impact on the local economy and the community at large. The upgrade is expected to attract racing enthusiasts, families, and friends, fostering a vibrant and engaging environment for all stakeholders involved.
