Eagle Farm Racecourse in Brisbane is set to host a spectacular Super Saturday of racing following the washout of Queensland Derby Day. The heavy rain that plagued the Derby Day led to poor visibility conditions, prompting officials to abandon the meeting after just five races. Jockeys raised concerns about the track’s safety, leading to the decision to reschedule the Group 1 races for the upcoming weekend.
The unexpected Super Saturday will feature three Group 1 races, including the Kingsford Smith Cup and the Queensland Derby, which were postponed due to the adverse weather conditions. The Queensland Oaks for 3-year-old fillies will proceed as scheduled. Cool Archie emerged victorious in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes on a Heavy 10 track before the meeting was called off.
Following discussions among jockeys and officials, it was decided to move the Fred Best Classic to Wednesday at Doomben, with a shortened distance of 1350m. This adjustment allows winning three-year-olds a chance to qualify for the prestigious Stradbroke Handicap. The winning trainer will have valuable time to prepare their horse for the Group 1 race on June 14.
Racing Queensland’s chief steward, Josh Adams, emphasized the importance of prioritizing rider and horse welfare in adverse conditions. While the track was deemed safe, visibility and kickback issues led to the cancellation of the remaining races. Officials are optimistic that the rescheduled races will take place under improved weather conditions next week.
To accommodate the rescheduled races, two scheduled races at Eagle Farm will be moved to the Sunshine Coast the following Sunday. All scratchings for the postponed races will be reinstated. Brisbane Racing Club will honor general admission tickets from the abandoned meeting on the new race day.
The weather outlook for Brisbane is promising, with forecasts predicting clearer skies and minimal rain for the upcoming week. The anticipation is high for the Super Saturday event, offering racing enthusiasts a thrilling lineup of top-class races at Eagle Farm Racecourse.
