Greyhound Racing Victoria has recently made an intriguing appointment, selecting former News Corp executive Tom Salom as its new chairman. Salom, who brings over two decades of media experience to the role, was chosen by Racing Minister Anthony Carbines for a three-year term beginning in late September.
Replacing outgoing chair Peita Duncan, who had completed her maximum 10-year tenure on the GRV board, Salom’s appointment was met with optimism. Racing Minister Carbines commended Salom’s leadership qualities and expressed confidence in his ability to leverage his extensive corporate and sporting background in his new position.
Having departed from his role as the national commercial director and managing editor at News Corp last year, Salom’s track record includes managing media partnerships with prominent sporting bodies such as the AFL, Cricket Australia, Tennis Australia, and Racing Victoria. His 27-year tenure at News Corp, including more than 20 years in various management roles, underscores his wealth of experience in the media industry.
Expressing his enthusiasm for his new role at Greyhound Racing Victoria, Salom highlighted his intention to utilize his commercial and media expertise to enhance the industry’s reach and engagement with both current and prospective stakeholders. He acknowledged the solid foundation laid by his predecessor, Peita Duncan, and pledged to build on the organization’s successes.
Besides his responsibilities at Greyhound Racing Victoria, Salom is actively involved in various community and industry initiatives. Currently serving on the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Foundation Growth Committee, he also holds non-executive director positions with the Australian National Veterans Arts Museum and the Emerald and District Mitre 10 Co-op. Salom’s leadership extends to overseeing major events such as the Jayco Herald Sun Tour and the Herald Sun/Transurban Run for the Kids.
