Danielle Smith, a greyhound trainer, never envisioned this career path for herself. Originally from New Zealand, her journey into greyhound racing began unexpectedly when she responded to a job advertisement by trainer John McInerney at the age of 16. Despite having no prior connection to greyhounds, the idea of working with dogs piqued her interest, leading her to embark on a path that would define her future.
After a hiatus during university, where she pursued a Bachelor of Science in animal science, Smith’s passion for greyhound racing was reignited while working under the guidance of respected New Zealand trainer Ray Adcock. Although her initial aspiration was to become a veterinarian, circumstances led her to study animal science instead, a decision that ultimately steered her towards a career in training greyhounds.
Smith’s transition to Australia was prompted by a series of earthquakes that damaged her residence in New Zealand, prompting her to seek new opportunities abroad. Initially purchasing a pet store, she later found herself drawn back to her love for greyhounds after selling the shop. A chance encounter with Dave and Rose Geall, coupled with her experience in the industry, set her on a course to pursue training full-time.
Under the mentorship of Geall and drawing upon her past experiences with Adcock and McInerney, Smith embraced her new vocation wholeheartedly. Her dedication and expertise bore fruit as her first two litters, sired by My Redeemer and Flying Riccardo, achieved a remarkable 100% success rate on the racetrack.
Smith’s joy in witnessing each dog’s unique characteristics and accomplishments on the track is palpable. The thrill of seeing her bred and trained pups excel in their races, from their initial trial runs to their first victories, is a testament to her commitment and love for the sport.
Among her many triumphs, Enzo Envy’s victory holds a special place in Smith’s heart. Overcoming early challenges, the dog’s win at Ballarat after 14 starts evoked a deeply emotional response from Smith, underscoring the bond she shares with her canine companions.
Currently overseeing a team of around 17 dogs, with a third litter on the way, Smith operates from the facilities of Tina Womann and Dennis Trewin, who have been instrumental in supporting her journey. Grateful for the guidance she has received from mentors and the backing of her current supporters, Smith remains focused on her ultimate goal: winning prestigious races like the Melbourne Cup.
As she continues to strive for excellence in her training career, Smith’s unwavering passion for greyhound racing propels her towards even greater achievements. With dreams of securing coveted titles like the Melbourne Cup, her dedication and talent position her as a rising star in the competitive world of greyhound racing.
