As Queensland gears up for the Origin Greyhound Series, the spotlight falls on Garrison, a standout distance runner with a mix of state allegiances. Trained by Chris Brydon, this black dog is co-owned by Grafton trainer Tony Newing and his mate Michael Williams. Newing, a proud Queenslander, and Williams, a NSW native supporting the Maroons, unite in their pride for Garrison.
Origin Series, to be held at Q2 Parklands, marks a new venue for the event. Despite Garrison’s recent mixed form, the selectors saw beyond his recent results, recognizing his true potential. Garrison’s track record boasts 16 wins from 62 races, making him a formidable contender in the upcoming series.
Having waited for around 18 months to race under Brydon’s guidance, Newing and Williams found Garrison, a smart acquisition who has since proved his worth on the track. Their journey with Garrison has seen them witness his prowess firsthand, including a remarkable victory at Albion Park.
As Garrison preps for the Origin Distance event, his owners anticipate a breakthrough performance on the big stage. Despite numerous Group 3 and Listed Finals appearances, Garrison is yet to clinch a major title. Newing and Williams remain hopeful that this could be the moment for their talented chaser.
The Origin Greyhound Series comprises various races, with Garrison set to compete in the Distance event over 710 meters. Queensland aims to reclaim the title after NSW’s victory in 2024. Newing, also a successful gallops trainer, sees promise in his filly, Flee With Me, hinting at future success in the making.
With a busy day ahead, juggling gallopers at Lismore before heading to Q2 Parklands, Newing’s passion for greyhound racing shines through. Eager to involve more of his galloping circle in the greyhound scene, Newing’s enthusiasm for the sport remains unwavering.
Racing Queensland salutes the Indigenous custodians of the land and looks ahead to an exciting Origin showdown, where Garrison will carry the hopes of Queenslanders in a bid for glory.
