GRV’s Pilot Program Revolutionizes Greyhound Racing Calendar

Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) has unveiled a groundbreaking pilot program set to revolutionize the racing calendar. The initiative, scheduled to run from September 8, 2024, to January 30, 2025, will introduce 13th and 14th races at selected venues while reducing the number of weekly race meetings. By temporarily suspending the second Sunday day race meeting and reallocating races across Monday to Thursday, GRV aims to enhance wagering outcomes and maximize the utilization of greyhounds.

The primary goal of the pilot program is to evaluate the advantages of maintaining a similar number of races per week with fewer race meetings. With two racing tracks currently inactive, the initiative also aims to address the demands of the racing program by optimizing the existing operational tracks. The selected venues for the pilot program will host varying numbers of races, ranging from 13 to 14, on designated days throughout the week, subject to participant nominations.

The participating tracks and expected race schedules include Ballarat, Shepparton, Warrnambool, Geelong, Bendigo, and more. While Healesville and Sale will continue their Sunday race meetings, Sandown Park will maintain its Monday night races. Throughout the pilot, GRV will closely monitor the program’s progress and gather feedback from key stakeholders, including employees, clubs, participants, and industry associations like the Greyhound Owners, Trainers, and Breeders Association (GOTBA).

Collaborating with Sky Racing, GRV aims to optimize race schedules and gaps between races to enhance the overall racing experience for participants and officials. The pilot program represents a significant step towards modernizing the greyhound racing industry and adapting to the evolving landscape of wagering and audience engagement. By exploring innovative approaches to race scheduling and venue utilization, GRV demonstrates its commitment to advancing the sport while meeting the needs of various stakeholders.

Damien Ractliffe, a seasoned public affairs and communications specialist with a background in sports journalism, emphasizes the importance of this pilot program in shaping the future of greyhound racing in Victoria. As GRV embarks on this ambitious initiative, the industry looks forward to the potential insights and outcomes that may redefine the traditional racing calendar and set new standards for efficiency and competitiveness.

In a dynamic and competitive racing environment, GRV’s pilot program signals a proactive approach to enhancing the sport’s appeal and sustainability. By seeking feedback, monitoring progress, and collaborating with industry partners, GRV sets a precedent for innovation and strategic planning in greyhound racing. As the pilot unfolds over the coming months, stakeholders and enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the impact of these bold initiatives on the future of the sport.
