New mum Tayla French is embarking on a unique journey, combining motherhood with a passion for harness racing. With her baby Levi in tow, French is determined to make her mark on the racing scene with Parisian Artiste, a contender in the Victorian Inter Dominion trotting series.
French recently made a remarkable comeback to race driving at Melton, just four weeks after giving birth to Levi. Now, she finds herself in Brisbane, alongside her son and a four-horse team, gearing up for the Queensland Constellations Carnival.
While French and Levi flew to Brisbane, her partner Alex Ashwood and supporter Darren Carroll drove the team north. Ashwood has since returned home to manage their sizable stable, leaving French and her mother Kym to handle the horses in Brisbane.
Stationed at Albion Park, French’s mother assists with grandparent duties as French tends to the horses daily. French expresses gratitude for Levi’s easygoing nature, making the transition to racing life smoother than expected.
Among the equine squad are Dooo Dont Think, Williams, and Manhatten Chick, the latter being a recent Bendigo winner eyeing the Queensland Oaks. However, the spotlight shines brightest on Parisian Artiste, affectionately known as “Hector” in the stables.
Parisian Artiste’s previous Inter Dominion campaign in Sydney has honed his skills for travel, with French noting his maturity and readiness for the Queensland challenge. Despite drawing a wide barrier in the upcoming heat, French remains confident in Hector’s abilities.
French, a seasoned reinswoman, had momentarily paused her racing career for maternity leave but eagerly returned to the track with Parisian Artiste. Her dedication to Hector’s campaign is unwavering, emphasizing her excitement for the upcoming races.
While she primarily drives Parisian Artiste, French contemplates the logistics of handling multiple horses during race nights in Brisbane. With solo strapping duties looming, French remains adaptable and optimistic about the challenges ahead.
