Notable Speech, the 2024 2,000 Guineas victor, has been supplemented for the upcoming July Cup challenge at Newmarket following an impressive recent gallop that caught the attention of his connections. The decision to enter the premier sprint event on July 12 was made after the horse showcased promising form.
Trained by Charlie Appleby, Notable Speech is set to compete over six furlongs for the first time in the Al Basti Equiworld July Cup at Newmarket this weekend. The horse, a previous winner of the 2,000 Guineas, demonstrated his readiness for the challenge during a recent gallop, prompting his team to secure his spot in the upcoming prestigious race.
Since his debut on the all-weather track in January 2024, Notable Speech has exclusively raced over a mile, with his standout performance occurring at the Rowley Mile last May. Despite facing tougher competition subsequently, including finishing fourth in races such as the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot this season, he remains a contender to watch.
Joining a field of 16 contenders for the July Cup, Notable Speech is one of the two supplementary entries from the renowned Godolphin stable. Another addition from Godolphin is Spy Chief, owned by Sheikh Mohammed’s operation, who will also compete after the necessary supplementary fee was paid.
Symbol Of Honour, another Godolphin entry, has shown exceptional form this year, winning four out of five starts, including a victory in the Group Two Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock in May. With a strong lineup of contenders, the July Cup promises to be a fiercely competitive event.
Trainer Andrew Balding’s Flora Of Bermuda, who finished third in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, is among the potential runners for the upcoming race. Alongside Flora Of Bermuda, other contenders such as Rogue Lightning and Night Raider are anticipated to showcase their talents at the event.
Night Raider, trained by Karl Burke, is expected to perform well over the six-furlong distance, having previously struggled in shorter races. Burke expressed confidence in Night Raider’s abilities and highlighted the horse’s preference for a slightly longer trip, indicating the potential for a strong showing at the July Cup.
Additional notable contenders include Inisherin, trained by Kevin Ryan, Whistlejacket from Aidan O’Brien’s stable, and the high-class mare Believing, who is in foal to Frankel and is poised to make her final career appearance before retirement under trainer George Boughey.
With a mix of seasoned champions and up-and-coming talents set to compete, the July Cup at Newmarket promises an exciting showcase of speed and skill as some of the finest horses in the racing world vie for victory.
