The NSW greyhound industry recently convened at Sydney’s Wentworth Park for a two-day Future Summit, aiming to chart a sustainable course for the sport’s future. The summit, attended by major industry stakeholders from TAB and non-TAB racing clubs across the state, addressed key initiatives to propel the industry forward.
Attendees from various sectors, including the Trainers Advisory Group, the Young Participants Panel, and the Greyhound Breeders, Owners, and Trainers Association, participated in discussions on innovative approaches. Among the topics deliberated were transitioning greyhounds to post-racing life, the establishment of an Industry Welfare Fund, and the introduction of hock braces to enhance racing welfare.
One of the central themes of the summit was the optimization of the racing footprint to determine the ideal number of race clubs. GRNSW CEO Steve Griffin emphasized the importance of industry-wide collaboration in this decision-making process, underscoring the need for inclusivity and stakeholder engagement.
Industry leaders, including the president of the Dubbo Greyhound Club, Shayne Stiff, highlighted the significance of involving all stakeholders in shaping the future landscape of greyhound racing. The criteria for racing footprint optimization encompass factors such as participant population proximity, nomination strength, lease costs, and recent venue investments.
Moreover, GRNSW unveiled an ambitious vision to enhance pet placement programs, aiming to double the number of greyhounds rehomed as pets within three years. The proposed dual-pathway model seeks to streamline adoption processes by leveraging digital platforms and third-party placement providers to expedite pet placements.
Notably, the Young Participants Panel presented their insights on the industry’s future, emphasizing the need to attract and retain younger participants for a sustainable and vibrant sector. Their perspective resonated with industry veterans, signaling a collective commitment to fostering a progressive and inclusive environment.
GRNSW’s strategy to become a global leader in greyhound pet placement reflects a shift towards modernization and efficiency in industry practices. By embracing technological advancements and stakeholder input, the NSW greyhound industry is poised to thrive and evolve sustainably in the coming years.
The industry’s collaborative efforts at the Future Summit underscore a collective commitment to ensuring the welfare and longevity of greyhound racing in NSW. With a focus on innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability, the industry is poised to navigate future challenges and opportunities, setting a precedent for responsible and progressive sports governance.
