A premier Queensland greyhound racing event has been cancelled after a track at the new $85 million greyhound racing facility The Q was deemed “unsuitable for trialling or racing” for the second time in a week. The Brisbane Cup was postponed due to unsafe conditions caused by a “watering issue” at The Q in Ipswich, leading to the track being declared unfit for racing.
Racing Queensland had previously paused racing at The Q to conduct an independent assessment of the track following a series of greyhound deaths since trials began in March. The facility has faced scrutiny over safety concerns, with at least seven dogs reported to have died due to injuries sustained at the track before its official opening.
As a result of the assessments, the rescheduled event at The Q was cancelled, and racing on the Q2 track has been suspended indefinitely. Racing Queensland emphasized the need to ensure a consistent and suitable racing surface before resuming races, while acknowledging operational challenges in rescheduling meetings at Albion Park.
The $85 million facility, a collaboration between Racing Queensland and local clubs, was highlighted for its safety standards and animal welfare focus. However, the track’s safety incidents have raised significant concerns, prompting calls for immediate action to address the welfare of greyhounds involved in the industry.
Acting Minister for Racing, Steven Minnikin, expressed disappointment over the cancellation of the Brisbane Cup and assured that independent investigations into the track and operations at The Q were underway. The former Queensland government’s investment in the facility underscored the importance of upholding animal welfare standards, with the current government committed to ensuring necessary steps are taken.
Labor’s Member for Ipswich, Jennifer Howard, criticized the safety incidents at The Q as unacceptable and called for transparency and concrete measures to safeguard animal welfare. She urged the removal of claims touting the track as the safest in the country, emphasizing the need for genuine efforts to protect the well-being of the greyhounds involved.
With ongoing investigations and remediation efforts taking place at The Q, the future of greyhound racing at the facility remains uncertain. The series of cancellations and safety issues have cast a shadow over the once-promising venue, raising broader questions about the regulatory oversight and standards within the greyhound racing industry.
As stakeholders navigate the challenges at hand, the focus on animal welfare and track safety takes center stage, prompting a critical reevaluation of protocols and practices to ensure the well-being of racing greyhounds. The incidents at The Q serve as a reminder of the inherent risks associated with competitive racing and the imperative of maintaining the highest standards of care and safety for all participants in the sport.
