The Queensland government has initiated a review of horse and greyhound racing in the state to enhance the industry’s sustainability. Sport and Racing Minister Tim Mander announced the appointment of a committee comprising experts from harness, thoroughbred, and greyhound racing domains to oversee the review process.
Committee members include barrister Scott Neaves, Queensland Racing Integrity Commission steward Kym Daly, and communications specialist Lynette Keep, who is also a licensed greyhound trainer. Matthew McGrath, the committee chair and former head of the Australian Turf Club, will lead the comprehensive review expected to conclude by late 2025.
The review, spurred by more than 1200 submissions from the community and industry, aims to shape the future of racing in Queensland while upholding high standards of animal welfare. Racing Queensland has expressed support for the government’s commitment to fortifying the state’s racing industry.
Concerns surrounding animal welfare in the racing sector have prompted various groups, including the RSPCA and Animals Australia, to advocate for stricter regulations. The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds (CPG) has raised objections, citing incidents of greyhound deaths during trials at Queensland’s newest racing track, The Q in Ipswich.
In its submission to the review, the CPG called for a potential phase-out of greyhound racing in Queensland, emphasizing the need for increased scrutiny on animal injuries and fatalities within the industry. The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission reported a significant number of injuries among racing greyhounds, raising further questions about the well-being of animals involved in the sport.
During the 2023-24 financial year, the industry witnessed the retirement of numerous thoroughbreds and standardbreds, underscoring the broader implications of animal welfare concerns within the racing sector. The review process is expected to address these issues comprehensively to ensure the long-term viability of horse and greyhound racing in Queensland.
