Racing WA is dedicated to nurturing young talent in the harness racing industry, and in line with this commitment, it has launched the Juniors Harnessing New Drivers Series for 2025. The series, featuring fortnightly races exclusively for concession drivers, is set to commence at Pinjarra Paceway on Monday, January 13. The inaugural event, the Spurr Stud Novice Driver Concession series, will witness ten emerging drivers competing for valuable points without incurring penalties.
Throughout the series, drivers will accumulate points based on their performance, with the top finishers earning significant rewards. The point system is structured to incentivize competitive racing, with first-place finishers receiving 17 points, followed by decreasing point values for subsequent positions. The initiative aims to provide a platform for young drivers to showcase their skills, gain exposure, and foster their development in the sport.
Cameron Brown, Racing WA’s Head of Harness Racing and Special Projects, emphasized the importance of supporting the next generation of drivers in Western Australia. He highlighted how initiatives like the Juniors Harnessing New Drivers Series not only offer young talents regular racing opportunities but also contribute to the long-term sustainability and growth of harness racing in the region.
Driver selection for each race is conducted through a ballot system to ensure fairness and equal chances for all eligible concession drivers. The rotation of drivers from week to week aims to provide a level playing field and maintain the penalty-free nature of the races, allowing horses to remain eligible for their ongoing campaigns while enabling young drivers to gain valuable experience and confidence.
Abbey Vidovich, one of the aspiring junior drivers participating in the series, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the competitive opportunities it offers to emerging talents. She emphasized the significance of the series in helping young drivers establish themselves in the industry and connect with trainers, thus expanding their networks and visibility.
Lachlan Kennelly echoed Vidovich’s sentiments, sharing his eagerness to engage in friendly competition with his peers and seize the chance to drive different horses for various trainers. He recognized the series as a pivotal stepping stone in his career, providing him with valuable driving experience and exposure to diverse racing environments.
The race series not only serves as a platform for young drivers to hone their skills but also fosters camaraderie and healthy rivalry among participants. With each race presenting a new opportunity for drivers to showcase their abilities and make a mark in the industry, the Juniors Harnessing New Drivers Series holds immense promise for the future of harness racing in Western Australia.
