Star pacer Fighter Command is gearing up for a shot at the world’s richest harness race by targeting the $60,000 Beautide in Hobart on August 2. Trained by Jess Tubbs, the four-year-old will aim to secure a spot in the $2.1 million TAB Eureka at Menangle on September 6, having been bred and foaled in Tasmania.
Despite missing out on an invitation to the Rising Sun, Fighter Command is set to focus on the Beautide once more. Last year, he was withdrawn from the TAB Eureka due to a serious health issue but has since made a strong comeback with two wins and two fourth-place finishes in five races.
In a bid to progress towards the TAB Eureka, Fighter Command will face a tough challenge in the Nevele R Stud Pace at Melton, starting from gate 10. His main competition includes the unbeaten The Narcissist from the Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin stable.
While Fighter Command stays south, Tubbs plans to send her star mare Rakero Rebel to the $150,000 Group 1 Golden Girl at Albion Park. Rakero Rebel will test her form in a race at Melton before heading to Queensland, with Better Eclipse also being considered for the trip pending his upcoming trials.
Better Eclipse has a history of success in Queensland, having previously won the Group 1 Sunshine Sprint and performed well in the Brisbane Inter Dominion series. Tubbs herself has enjoyed triumphs in Queensland, including her first Group 1 training victory with Momentslikethese in the 2021 Queensland Oaks.
Another contender with Brisbane aspirations is Arcee Phoenix, set to return from a break in the Yabby Dams Trotters’ Free-For-All at Melton. Trained by Chris Svanosio, the six-year-old recently claimed victory in the $NZ600,000 TAB Trot in Cambridge and is in the running for Inter Dominion favoritism.
As the harness racing season progresses, the competition heats up with top contenders vying for coveted spots in prestigious races. Trainers like Tubbs and Svanosio carefully strategize their campaigns, considering past performances and upcoming challenges to maximize their chances of success on the track.
