Harness Racing Icon Brian “Johnno” Johnstone Passes Away at 84
The harness racing community in Goulburn Valley mourns the loss of Brian “Johnno” Johnstone, a prominent local figure who passed away at the age of 84 on Thursday, March 6. Known for his deep roots in Kerang and enduring friendship with Murray Pay, Brian’s legacy in the sport spans a significant period.
Brian’s introduction to the racing world began with his horse, Fast Fergus, a Vestalba Rainbow gelding that showcased remarkable performance, securing 17 wins and 38 placings, notably triumphing at Kyabram and Elmore. His most cherished achievement came through A Special Dream, a Live Or Die gelding, which clinched victory at Melton on February 23, 2018, under the skillful guidance of Darby McGuigan.
Throughout his career, Brian was associated with notable champions like Prince Con and Serg Blanco, the victor of the 2023 Yarra Valley Cup. Survived by his son Wayne, daughter Leeanne, second wife Lorraine Duffy, stepsons Steven and Peter Duffy, stepdaughter Sharon Brittan, and great-grandchildren Jake, Todd, and Ryan, Brian leaves behind a lasting legacy in the hearts of many.
A memorial service in honor of Brian is expected to take place at the Kialla Raceway on Friday, March 21. Harness Racing Victoria expresses heartfelt condolences to Brian’s family and friends during this difficult time.
